Teen R&B/Pop sensation, Mindless Behavior (Streamline/Conjunction/Interscope), will treat their fans to a 26 city tour—just in time for summer. Their much anticipated All Around The World tour will kick off on July 3rd in Stockton, CA. The announcement follows the March release of their docu-movie and duly-titled sophomore album.

All Around The World serves as the second headlining tour for the ever-busy quartet—comprised of members Prodigy, Ray Ray, Roc Royal, and Princeton. No strangers to the stage, Mindless’ tour resume ranges from opening for superstars Janet Jackson and Justin Bieber, to top billing on 2011′s Scream Tour. In 2012 they headlined the #1 Girl Tour in promotion of their debut album.

This summer’s tour will feature a longer set, incorporating some of the group’s latest hits, including lead single “Keep Her on the Low” and fan favorite “All Around The World.” Opening acts include fellow teen stars The OMG Girlz (“Gucci This (Gucci That?)”) and Coco Jones (“Holla At the DJ”).

They recently lent their dance skills to WAT-AAH!’s Move Your Body 2013 campaign and PSA—a youth focused initiative which aims to improve kids’ health through physical activity. Just prior, the group joined Katy Perry and Usher in Washington D.C. to perform at the Kids Inaugural concert for children and military families on January 19, 2013.

Kanye West and Lady Gaga stream live concerts to your iPhone with new Spacebar app Continue reading →

Live music fans already have some excellent choices for listening to concerts on an iOS device: Archivist, which taps into the massive Live Music Archive, is one great option. The just-launched Spacebar app is another. Rather than serving up concert recordings, however, Spacebar lets you listen in on live shows as they happen. There’s no archive here; once a concert is over, that’s it. In fact, before you can even hit the play button you’ll need to agree not to record, copy, or distribute the live stream. That strict usage policy helps Spacebar avoid costly licensing deals with publishers, according to TechCrunch.

“There’s no rewind button here”

Artists have begun lining up to support Spacebar, and these aren’t just your local indie acts; Kanye West, Lady Gaga, and John Legend have signed on to stream shows this year. Users can listen to five minutes of each concert at no charge, after which they can pay $0.99 to keep streaming. That nominal fee is split between the artist, venue, and Spacebar. Generous fans can even “tip” artists an extra $0.99, $1.99, or $2.99 if they like what they hear. Musicians are paid for these “audio tickets” via PayPal shortly after the performance ends.

Venues also receive a good bit of promotion in the app, always listed beside artists on the “Now Playing” screen. Each participating venue’s location is highlighted on a map for anyone interested in catching future performances in person. The concept behind Spacebar is unique, and the app could quickly prove popular if more mainstream artists join in and concert streams prove reliable. (Spacebar says quality ranges up to 256Kbps.) A visual revamp wouldn’t hurt, though; as of now Spacebar’s design is a bit lacking. The app is available from the Mac App Store.

For Willie Nelson, the recent explosion at the fertilizer plant in West, Texas, hits close to home. The country music legend was born and raised in Abbott, about six miles from the blast site.

“West is like our backyard,” Nelson told CMT Hot 20 Countdown’s Terry Bumgarner in Nashville. “It’s where I grew up. I rode my bike from Abbott to West and back all the time on that road where all this stuff happened.”

He’s using his star power to help the West Fire Department by turning his April 28 concert into a fundraiser. The show was originally intended to celebrate his 80th birthday.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the people of West,” Nelson told CMT Crossroads. “There are a lot of our friends and loved ones and neighbors down there. We talked to some of them and some of them made it out OK, and some of them didn’t. But they’re strong and they’ll be back. It’s one of those things you don’t get over. But you will get through it.”

Officials have recovered a dozen bodies from the wreckage so far, including five members of the West Fire Department.

Model. Actress. S. Entrepreneur. All of these roles complete the many faces of Ms. Erica Mena. Born in November of 1987, Erica Mena has spent the majority of her existence in the public eye – doing it all from high fashion editorial spreads to gracing the catwalk in both New York and Miami’s infamous fashion weeks.

Ever since booking her first job as a Sears catalog model at the tender age of 14, Erica has spent over a decade landing spreads for Rocawear and Tommy Hilfiger and serving as a spokesperson/ambassador/model for products such as Luster’s Hair and Azzure. Over the years, Mena has remained a trendsetter in both music and urban cultures.
Mena has been viewed by millions all across the world, as she worked and rubbed shoulders with the infamous Kardashian clan on the top-rated show, “Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami.” Seeing this vibrant energy, drive, determination, style, and grace, it was only natural for VH1 producers to reach out to Erica to spice up the plot on the hit reality show, Love & Hip Hop.

While using influences like Cindy Crawford and Rita Morena for inspiration, Erica doesn’t believe in limiting herself. Currently, Mena also works as a VJ for the Spanish-channel Mun2. In this role, Mena recaps the show, RPM Miami, which is a long-running and very popular Spanish soap opera. “I’m unique, one-of-a-kind, fearless, and driven. With these characteristics, I bring more to the table than just a pretty face,” says Mena. “I’m ready to conquer the world.” At the ripe age of 24, there is no hesitation that Mena is well on her way to achieving this lofty goal. Sit back and watch the show!

Mystery has always been an important part of The Weeknd’s whole shtick. Having dropped three hugely successful mixtapes, the first of which was preceded by no hype or co-signs, and the following ones only by the quality of the first volume (which bagged the singer a co-sign from fellow Toronto native Drake), along with only a handful of videos and sticking to a strictly “no interviews” policy, little is known about Abel Tesfaye. Whether The Weeknd is his alias or the name of a collective including the producers and musicians that surrounds him, we still aren’t quite sure. And it’s this mysterious phenomena that allows him to flog 289,000 units in a week when his previously free projects are released at retail, sell his live shows out within a minute of going on sale, and have a new genre cropping up every time a critic chooses to write about him.

The Weeknd’s live show is our only glimpse of his personality other than what he has chosen to commit to record, and with his hazy drug veiled ballads, not a huge amount is allowed to seep through. On appearing on stage at Manchester’s The Ritz, it’s impressive how much like these recordings Abel sounds as he reels through fan favourites and new tracks, including ‘High For This’, his feature on Juicy J’s latest single ‘One Of Those Nights’ and current single ‘Twenty Eight’. Although the recordings are delivered stone-faced and seriously, the Canadian crooner can’t help but drop in a cheeky smile here and there, along with the odd MJ-inspired dance move, as he looks on over his cult-like fanbase.

Having released such a quantity of music in such a short space of time, The Weeknd hasn’t really had time to breathe. One of the only wavers in his live show is his ability to provide some variation whilst performing a selection of songs that were all presumably recorded around the same time, rarely varying in mood or subject matter. He manages to counter this in some cases with epic live arrangements, including Drake-collab ‘Crew Love’ and a phenomenal performance of ‘Glass Table Girls’ utilising his live band, adding drum fills and an energy that would feel more at home at a metal gig than an R&B show. However, having already covered the fan favourites and finishing up with a lighters-in-the-air rendition of ‘Wicked Games’ the encore of ‘Lonely Star’ and ‘Outside’ does feel a little anti-climatic – although this doesn’t spoil too much.

Without unveiling too much of the mystery, Abel’s live show gives just enough away to leave fans feeling closer to the man behind the music, and as all great shows should, adds further context to his work. We now know that as well as being able to record masterpieces, he also has the skills to back it up with flawless live performances renditions, as well as getting tiny glimpses of playfulness from the 23-year-old who – let’s face it – behind his melancholic catalogue, must be having the time of his life right now.

When it comes to raising awareness about social change, a little celebrity power always helps.

Salma Hayek Pinault and Beyoncé are throwing their weight behind Chime for Change Presents: The Sound of Change Live, a global concert for girls’ and women’s empowerment to be held in London on June 1. For those who won’t be able to hop on a plane to London, the concert will be broadcast worldwide. Beyoncé and Hayek have also enlisted the help of Florence + the Machine, Ellie Goulding, HAIM, Iggy Azalea, John Legend, Laura Pausini, Rita Ora and Timbaland for the show, which will be held at Twickenham Stadium.

In order to ensure that all the revenue from ticket sales goes to supporting projects aimed at female empowerment, fashion monolith Gucci will underwrite the costs of throwing the event.

“Our goal is to call for change for girls and women in the loudest voice possible,” said Beyoncé in a news release. “I am excited for us to come together on June 1st to bring the issues of Education, Health and Justice for girls and women to the world stage.”

“There are no innocent bystanders in the information age,” said Hayek Pinault in the same news release. “Technology connects us as never before. But that means we also have the opportunity, and the responsibility, to do something about it. We can be defined not just by what we know, but by what we do, and that is the vision behind Chime for Change.”

Tickets go on on sale on Wednesday at 5 a.m. ET through the campaign website and Ticketmaster. Concertgoers will also have the option to donate the cost of their ticket to a non-profit of their choice.

SXSW 2013: Prince Closes Festival With Epic Concert Continue reading →

Prince gave fair warning last night somewhere between his second and third encores. “Don’t make me hurt you – you know how many hits I have?” he asked the crowd packed into La Zona Rosa in Austin as SXSW drew to a close.

Enough that he didn’t get to them all. Not even close, in fact, though he performed for two hours and 40 minutes, returning to the stage time and again for six or seven encores in all. At a festival where special guests and counterintuitive collaborations are the currency of much-coveted buzz, Prince relied on himself – and on a band that was tighter than a Marine Corps top sheet.

As much jam session for the NPG as it was a concert, Prince sang, danced, played a little piano and was generous in spotlighting his backing musicians, who included 11 horn players, two guitarists, a bass player, a drummer, a percussionist and a host of vocalists. The only thing Prince didn’t do was play guitar, but then “Purple Rain” didn’t include the outro guitar solo, either.

He was probably just too busy directing the show, as if sampling and savoring each ingredient and adjusting to taste. The songs rarely seemed to start or stop, only to shift and flow in new directions as “Shhh” became “Musicology,” which transformed into “Extra Lovable,” with bursts of brass tumbling over Prince’s vocals. The band did the same thing without him during instrumental sections, sliding from tight, funky soul laced with horns into an impressionistic jazz-tinted section that featured a horn solo, followed by a ripping guitar break.

They stretched out on “Purple Rain,” and Prince urged the crowd to sing wordless vocals in place of the guitar solo, and reflected on his career choice. “I love being a musician,” he said. “It feels like a servant. A servant for you.”

That song ended a 50-minute main set that began with the horn players taking the stage by parading through the crowd like a New Orleans second line, and also included a ringing burst of synths and horns on “1999.” For the string of encores, Prince pulled out covers of songs by Curtis Mayfield, Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, and soul and funk workouts “like we do in Minneapolis.” He dipped into Morris Day and the Time’s catalog with “Jungle Love,” played Sheila E.’s hit “The Glamorous Life” (which Prince wrote) and unearthed his own rarity, “Something in the Water (Does Not Compute),” singing anguished lyrics accompanied by piano on a darkened stage.

Finally, as the clock ticked toward 3 a.m., Prince wrapped up, even as diehards called for one more song.

A Tribe Called Quest opened the show with a set of songs that included “Can I Kick It,” “Bonita Applebum” and “Award Tour.” The show, dubbed “The Next Big Thing,” was presented by Samsung, which gave away 200 tickets to people who used the company’s tablet-like Galaxy cell phone to complete an 11-item scavenger hunt around Austin.
